In the Purāṇic tradition, Vrindā—later revered as Tulsi Devī—was a soul of extraordinary purity, born among the asuras yet wholly devoted to Maha Vishnu.
The Divine Union
Vrindā became the wife of Jālandhara, a powerful being born from the cosmic ocean through the fiery energy of Lord Śiva. Vrindā's unwavering chastity and devotion were so potent that they rendered her husband invincible; in devotional lore, this divine protection is sometimes symbolised as a sacred garland of flowers—an offering of love and purity bestowed before battle, embodying her living vow.
The Divine Test
When cosmic balance was threatened, Vishnu, bound by the laws of divine order, assumed a form that unknowingly broke Vrindā's vow, dissolving Jālandhara's protection and leading to his defeat. Upon realising the divine deception, Vrindā, stricken with grief yet unshaken in truth, immolated herself, and in the fire of her devotion cursed Vishnu to become stone, that He might experience stillness and separation as she had.
Vishnu accepted the curse in humility. At the earnest pleas of Maha Lakshmi, Vrindā lifted it before leaving her mortal form; yet the fragments of Vishnu's stone body fell upon the Earth and are worshipped to this day as sacred Śālagrāma stones, living symbols of His presence.

The Sacred Transformation
Moved by Vrindā's boundless love and sacrifice, Vishnu blessed her to become Tulsi—the sacred and healing plant, embodiment of devotion itself—declaring that no worship offered to Him would ever be complete without her leaves. Thus, Vrindā became Tulsi Devī: devotion made living, a divine presence rooted in the earth, purifying homes, hearts, and generations through love transformed into grace.
